The Centre for Railway Engineering (CRE) at Central Queensland University recently received $670,000 from the Queensland government to develop a device to monitor the condition of freight wagons. CRE previously received $869,500 from the state government to develop an electronic train braking system known as OzECR Both projects aim to benefit heavy haul freight rail lines. The two projects are being carried out in conjunction with rail equipment manufacturer Faiveley Transport Australia, part of the France-based Faiveley Groupe, and Rail Innovation Australia (RIA), a spin-off company established by the Cooperative Research Centre for Railway Engineering and Technologies for commercialising its intellectual property. Queensland Rail is participating in the electronic braking system project.
