The Australian Research Council Centre for Complex Systems and defence company Raytheon Australia have developed a software tool to reduce schedule and cost overruns in large, high-risk engineering projects. Called the Behaviour Engineering Support Environment (Bese), the tool won the award for Best Industry Experience Report at the Australian Software Engineering Conference in Perth this year. The project has received funding from Raytheon Australia and about $250,000/a since 2004 through the Centre for Complex Systems. Commercialisation is planned for the end of the year. Bese uses behaviour trees which consist of pictures and diagrams that represent fragments of system behaviour. The pieces are fitted together like a jigsaw to form a larger diagram. This allows system designers to comprehend the entire system and see what pieces are missing.
