The current debate about paid parental leave raises the question of whether the provision of this employee benefit would make a significant difference to attracting and retaining women in the engineering profession. Engineers Australia recognises the importance of attracting women to the engineering profession and then retaining female engineers in the workforce.rnThe vision of the Women in Engineering National Committee is that engineering should be an inclusive profession which values, supports and celebrates the contributions of women in the engineering team. However, paid parental leave is just one of the issues that affects the retention of women in the profession. While this benefit would be welcomed, research has shown that there are multiple reasons for the poor retention levels of women in the engineering profession.
