First-year engineering students from the University of WA won the 2008 Engineers Without Borders Australia Challenge by designing a low-cost water filtration system.rnThe competition asked students to design devices to help the people of the Kundal province in Cambodia, 70% of whom do not have access to safe drinking water or sanitation.rnAnother University of WA team received the BHP Biliton Award for Sustainable Design and Community Engagement for designing an environmentally-friendly washing machine.rnA team from Curtin University of Technology obtained the Thiess Award for Innovation in Appropriate Technology for developing an affordable water meter.rnTeams from the Australian National University, the University of Queensland and Central Queensland University also received prizes.
