Award winning sewage treatment

The Goodna Sewage Treatment Plant Stage 4A Upgrade recently won a 2013 Engineering Excellence Award in the environmental category from EA's Queensland Division. Projected population growth in the Goodna catchment, which includes Springfield, Wacol, Carole Park and Goodna in Brisbane, meant the plant was nearing its licensed capacity. It required a significant upgrade to account for growth and comply with the introduction of stringent effluent release license limits that came into effect on 1 January. The upgrade aimed to increase treatment capacity to 90,000 equivalent persons from 50,000 while reducing the environmental impact by minimising nutrient loads on the local environment. An investment of $115 million was needed for the upgrade envisioned by Queensland Urban Utilities and the South East Queensland Healthy Waterways Strategy.
