The role of specifications in safety information systems

While engineers may have been able to get away with minimal specifications for electromechanical systems of the past, they are now critical to the successful engineering of systems of the size and complexity we are attempting to build today. Specifications are no longer simply a means of archiving information; they need to play an active role in the system engineering process. They are a critical tool in stretching our intellectual capabilities to deal with increasing complexity.
