Over the past few weeks I have been closely following media commentary about Australia's economic future. With organisations like the OECD now openly questioning Australia's ability to manage our economy after the resources boom, there are important public debates taking place that our profession needs to be involved in. One example of such a discussion has been on the future of engineering-intensive manufacturing operations which are facing increasing economic pressure. I am firmly of the view that for Australia to have a prosperous future, we require our economy to be underpinned by sustainable agriculture, resources and manufacturing industries. Australia has a strong future in all three sectors, although not necessarily in the same format or mix that we see today. The key for continued sustainability in all three cases will be to drive productivity and innovation.
