Shortly after midnight on 3 December 1984, tons of deadly methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked from a tank at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant surrounded by a densely populated shanty town on the outskirts of Bhopal. It is estimated that around 3800 people died overnight while up to 10,000 may have died in the ensuing days, not to mention the animals they depended on. Campaigner for justice, Bhopal.net, says more than 150,000 people were left severely disabled and 22,000 have died of their injuries, however exact figures are unknown.
