John Pitt, managing director of pitt&sherry spoke to Engineers Australia magazine on the status quo of the cultural landscape when Tasmania's outsourcing program began. "We were at the forefront of Tasmania's outsourcing arrangements in the 1990s, and one of the most successful contracts we were involved in was the outsourcing of the technical engineering services to the then Tasmanian Department of Transport, which was a very effective arrangement for both parties. In its first year it approximately doubled the amount of work delivered and halved the cost of doing that work compared to historical levels," Pitt said. "People who came across from government to pitt&sherry found a more motivating environment than in their earlier public sector years. You can have very motivated engineers in the public sector, but it was something at that particular moment in time where that opportunity existed. Also, as the private sector has an essential commercial focus, we were able to combine the technical and commercial imperatives into the one product, all the while retaining good relations with the government client.
