Councils to flag coastal erosion

NSW planning minister Brad Haz-zard will release a draft circular aimed at stopping some coastal councils from imposing severe planning restrictions based on UN predictions of coastal erosion that could occur in 100 years' time. Council policies which relied solely on Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predictions rather than examining beach by beach data, only served to frustrate beachside owners, he said, some of whom lived near beaches where coastal erosion was reversing. "What's going to happen in a particular area depends very much on local topography and morphology," Hazzard said.
