Japan ups ante on infrastructure

Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe announced in May his government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will jointly provide US$110 billion for the financing of "innovative" infrastructure in Asia over the next five years. The figure, which exceeds the Chinese-led Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) s planned capitalisation of US$100 billion, represents a 30% increase on Tokyo's previous funding plans. The fund will focus on "high quality" aid, according to Japans government, by helping recipients make use of Japanese expertise in reducing pollution while building roads and railways.
