Milton Friedman, an economist, famously said in the 70s: "... a corporate executive is an employee of the owners of the business. He [sic] has direct responsibility to his [sic] employers. That responsibility is to conduct the business in accordance with their desires, which generally will be to make as much money as possible while conforming to the basic rules of the society ..." The world has changed significantly in 40 years. "Companies able to tackle issues such as poverty, climate change and population shifts are those most likely to succeed in the future," said eight global business leaders working as a World Business Council for Sustainable Development group called Tomorrow's Leaders. Companies represented include BP, TNT and Swiss Re.
