Linear motor technology transforms elevators

The first rope-free elevator system has been developed by ThyssenKrupp, utilising the linear motor technology from the magnetic levitation train Transrapid. The new MULTI unit system, is designed to enable the building industry to face the challenges of global urbanisation. "As the nature of building constructions evolve, it is also necessary to adapt elevator systems to better suit the requirements of buildings and high volumes of passengers," CEO of ThyssenKrupp Elevator AG Andreas Schierenbeck said. Operating on the basic premise of a circular system, MULTI consists of multiple cabins running in a loop at a targeted speed of 5 m/s. This would enable passengers to have near-constant access to an elevator cabin every 15 to 30 seconds, with a transfer stop every 50 m. MULTI is designed to incorporate multiple self-propelled elevator cabins per shaft, increasing the shaft transport capacity by up to 50%. This would make it possible to reduce the elevator footprint in buildings by as much as half.
