The past decade has seen an increase in active chatter in the community about the notion of how we are becoming a 'throw-away' society. The amount of manufactured goods we throw away continues to mount, with our weekly deposits to the council bins, the Salvo's or Vinnie's and various recycling programs forever on the increase. The reasons for this include: 1. product offers that promote faster upgrades (ie phones and televisions) 2. products that have built-in obsolescence (ie to break down or stop working effectively after a while such as toys and electronic goods) 3. low prices and wide availability that simply means products are replaced easily despite them continuing to function (eg when refurnishing and items such as kettles).
