In Sydney's northwest, progress on the construction of Australia's longest tunnels is moving swiftly with all four of the Northwest Rail Link's tunnel boring machines (TBMs) now in the ground. I visited the Cherrybrook site which will serve as both a departure and destination point for TBMs prior to the construction of Cherrybrook station. I am looking out across the large box excavated site that will eventually become Cherrybrook Station on the North West Rail Link, Australia's largest (and longest) tunnelling project to date. For the moment, the 16 m deep pit serves as the back of house operation for the two 900 t behemoths presently cutting their way towards Epping, approximately 6 km away.
