New Caledonia is best known for its beautiful beaches and colourful marine life. But when it comes to working with a $7 billion nickel project, logistics on the small island can be less than idyllic. Koniambo Nickel SAS was looking to increase its nitrogen output at its ferronickel smelter in New Caledonia, a predominantly French-speaking country. The company was already using nitrogen at three major points - its two furnaces, which required a high purity level of nitrogen, and its coal preparation plant, which could use a lower purity level of nitrogen.
