On 1 October 1964 at 6am, Hikari No. 1 departed Tokyo station to the applause of onlookers and the excitement of those on board. Bound for Osaka on the new Tokaido Shinkansen line, it passed its Tokyo-bound counterpart at around 8 am, both arriving at their destinations on time at 10 am - having covered the 515 km trip two and a half hours faster than the existing connection - and reaching up to 210 km/h during the journey.
