The authors investigate the bandwidth tradeoffs among coding, processing gain and modulation in maximising the normalised throughput of frequency-hopped multiple access communication systems having a fixed channel bandwidth. Reed-Solomon coding and FSK modulation are considered in analysing the tradeoffs. A more realistic (but more complicated) model for the error probability given a hit is employed in the analysis. An analysis is presented which accounts for the fact that the side information is imperfect.
