The authors analyse a queueing system MMPP/G/sub 1/,G/sub 2//1/B with queue length dependent service times. The arrival process of customers is assumed to be a Markov-modulated Poisson process (MMPP), and the distribution of service time of customers is G/sub 1/ or G/sub 2/, dependent on the queue length at the service initiation epoch. The authors obtain the queue length distribution both at departure epochs and at arbitrary times, and then obtain the loss probability and the mean waiting time. They apply their results to the cell discarding (CD) scheme operating at the output of a buffer for voice traffic in ATM networks. They also give some numerical examples to show the effects of the CD scheme.
