Federal agencies averted major computer headaches as 1999 turned to 2000, but the cost wasn't small. John Koskinen, the federal Y2K coordinator, estimates the price tag at $8.5 billion. A bunch of small problems cropped up at agency offices around the country, but in general he praises the investment in Y2K compliance by governments and the private sector. "There are some glitches around the edges, but the systems are running very well," Koskinen contends. "We can safely say that what has been referred to as the Y2K bug has been squashed with regard to the key infrastructure systems in the United States."
