LOS ANGELES GEARS UP PRODUCTION

Every morning in Los Angeles, tens of thousands of children clamber onto buses and ride many miles from their neighborhoods to get to school. These underage commuters journey hours every week because Los Angeles, like other U.S. cities, has failed to build enough neighborhood schools to keep pace with its burgeoning school-age population. To catch up, the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second largest in the U.S., must churn out 85 new schools and 60 additions in five years. That will require a Promethean effort, considering the district produced only 24 in the last two decades.
