Finding Support in Las Vegas

Bedrock in the valley of Las Vegas lies deep beneath interbedded layers of sand and clay deposited by rivers over millions of years. Some layers have hardened to form caliche—a deposit cemented by calcium carbonate. Other layers retain a gravelly structure. Because the caliche has a relatively high bearing capacity, it is possible to build large structures on this soil with only a mat foundation.
