Decades after pioneering the research into the civil engineering properties of shredded tires, California finally plans to use 860,000 tires as fill in a freeway embankment pilot project. Caltrans plans to use $400,000 worth of shredded passenger vehicle tires in a new $1.8-million on-ramp at one of the worst traffic bottlenecks in Silicon Valley, where Interstate 880 runs beneath Dixon Landing Road in Milpitas. By using the tires, the agency plans to shave up to a year off the schedule for an estimated $30-million reconstruction of the interchange.
