Although China continues to press ahead with the most aggressive dambuilding and water management program on the planet, the country is pursuing a much more environmentally friendly approach than in the past, claims Suo Lisheng, vice minister of the Ministry of Water Resources. Despite a stunning number of projects constructed since 1949―85,000 dams, 510 billion cu meters of reservoir capacity and 270,000 km of dikes ―China still faces daunting challenges in the water sector, he says.
