New Blast Simulator Would Replace Live Explosives Tests

Researchers hope that a blast simulator under construction at the University of California, San Diego, eventually will add another layer of defense against terrorist bombs aimed at buildings, bridges and other structures. The simulator is part of UCSD's Explosive Loading Laboratory Testing Program at Camp Elliott, eight miles east of the campus. It will use modular velocity generators to deliver shock waves to full-scale, structural elements. Servo-controlled, hydraulically powered arms will be able to test each component to failure.
