New LNG Terminal in Gulf Taps Abandoned Mining Site

Acting to leapfrog competing projects, a developer filed a plan to the Coast Guard March 1 to build a liquefied natural gas terminal on existing platforms in the Gulf of Mexico close to the mouth of the Mississippi River. If it receives a deepwater port license early next year, New Orleans-based McMoRan Exploration says it can have the proposed Main Pass Energy Hub in service by late 2007. The facility would be able to receive 1 billion cu ft per day of LNG and store up to 28 billion cu ft in a salt dome under the Gulf floor. With the large storage capacity, it will be able to deliver up to 2.5 billion cfd of regasi-fied product to points in Louisiana and Alabama through underwater pipelines.
