Ballooning population, coupled with urban migration and globalization of communications and trade, adds up to a demand for about $1 trillion in infrastructure development over the next five years in East Asia alone, according to World Bank estimates. Civil engineering researchers at Stanford University are trying to help the construction industry get ready to do something about it.
