China Towers Celebrate Steel, with Aid of Concrete

In an age of hybrid skyscrapers, one of China's oldest cities is reaching high with two record-breaking buildings, both broadcasting structural steel frames helped quietly by concrete. On one side of Guangzhou, work recently began on a 610-meter-tall television-observation tower, to be the loftiest. Across town, foundations for China's second-tallest building, at 432 m, also are under way.
