For the coker modification project at the Golden Eagle Refinery in Martinez, CA, Cherne Contracting Corporation faced a dilemma. While forming the main columns and tie beams of the structure was not a hurdle, constructing and supporting the mid-level and upper-level slabs was a challenge. Cherne wanted the mat foundation to be as free as possible from any obstructions, so they did not want to use conventional shoring methods to support the slabs from the mat. Once Symons provided a solution for this important requirement and several other forming details, it was time to get started. The heavy-duty Max-A-Form forming system was used for the mat foundation, support columns and tie beams. Since Cherne was able to reconfigure the Max-A-Form system for each of these structural elements, they were able to maximize equipment usage and minimize the total amount of equipment needed on the site.
