Capital's 'Southeast' Staging a Comeback

A just-started $1.7-billion development in Washington, D.C., is a major attempt at revitalizing the city's beleaguered Southeast section.The 42-acre Southeast Federal Center, planned as the biggest scheme of its kind in the capital, is riding on the coattails of the nearby Washington Nationals ballpark, opening in April. Eventually, the site will include 5.5 million sq ft of space. Plans call for 2,800 residential units, 1.8 million sq ft of offices and 400,000 sq ft of retail with a park along the Anacostia River. The scheme mixes new construction with adaptive re-use of five "protected" industrial buildings of the Washington Navy Yard. First-phase completion, by Clark Construction Group LLC, Beth-esda,Md.,is for 2009.
