The super-elevated, $93.6-mil-lion 1-64 Dunbar south Charleston Bridge across the Kanawha River in WV will be the longest continuous segmental span in the United States with a total length of 2,975 ft and a main span of 760 ft. Ifs not surprising, that constructing this super-size concrete bridge requires some impressive assembly techniques. The 1-64 Bridge introduces an innovative cantilever construction, instead of platforms and towers, the entire bridge will be constructed from the deck using travelers combined with a customized concrete form-work system to facilitate concrete pours at each bridge segment. The 165 structure segments vary from 16 to 40 ft in height to accommodate a radial curve with varying cross slope that rises from 2% to 10%. The unusual geometry on this bridge design made detailing each pour crucial for maintaining proper control. Since the bridge doesn't feature the typical wings common to cantilever bridge designs, attaching formwork to the previous casting would required additional anchorage points.
