Design in the international market no longer is just a professional service. It is big business. There now are 27 firms on the ENR Top Global Design Firms list with over $1 billion in design revenue. While much of this growth is from hot markets, there also is significant worldwide merger and acquisition activity. For example, Australia's WorleyParsons jumped onto both ENR lists after acquiring Calgary-based Colt Engineering, Dutch firm Fugro added 1,300 new people through acquisition in 2007, and Dutch Arcadis has been actively acquiring U.S. design firms.
