Rx for Texas Army Medical Site: A $2-Billion High-Tech Upgrade

Army medical personnel may not sleep much in their line of work, but when they do, they'll hit the sack in new, ultra-modern dormitories now being built at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, the planned new home of the Army's Medical Education and Training Campus. The complex is to become the center of medical training for the entire U.S. military but is only a small part of an eventual $2-billion effort to upgrade and expand the entire base, one of the Army's oldest active installations. Construction began last month on the two dorms under a $140-million design-build contract awarded to the joint ven- ture of Hensel Phelps, Greeley, Colo., and Jacobs Carter & Burgess, Fort Worth. The two dorm structures, which are being designed to meet LEED silver rating criteria, will each house 1,200 service members. Also set for major upgrade under the Army's base relocation and closure program (BRAC) is Brooke Army Medical Center, located at the Fort Sam Houston complex, and nearby Lackland Air Force Base. They will become part of the new Sari Antonio Military Medical Center that will house the military's largest in-patient ambulatory and outpatient clinic facilities when complete. A new multi- story tower is planned for Brooke that will house space for emergency, operating, clinical and administrative functions, as well as two parking garages and a central energy plant.
