As President Obama signed his economic recovery package, a group of transportation officials and a contractor huddled in Missouri to watch on television. Four minutes later, they signed a contract for nearly $10 million to replace a narrow, crumbling bridge with a new one built using steel. Contractors decided to use steel for the project because the main spans hadrnlengths of about 200 ft. "Steel is the most cost-effective type of construction for spans of this size," says Dennis Heckman, Missouri's state bridge engineer.
