When the Italian-themed Palazzo resort and casino opened in Las Vegas in January 2008, the 7.5 million-sq-ft property was the largest and most expensive in Las Vegas. In addition to breaking Las Vegas records, the $1.9-billion, 52-story project was also the largest commercial steel project in the nation and one of the fastest. Fabrication of the resort's 70,000 tons of structural steel was coordinated by AISC member Schuff Steel Co., Phoenix, which fabricated 60% of the steel at its own shops while outsourcing the remainder. The Tempe office of AISC Associate member BDS Steel Detailers detailed all of the steel, completing over 40,000 shop detail drawings. The entire steel erection was completed in only 24 continuous months.
