Public Needs Transit Choices

Recently, I served on the TXDOT 2030 Commission and what intrigued me is the continuing expectation that lane miles are the driver for solving regional mobility needs. Transporation decision-makers need to realize that a large percentage of our country could benefit from greater reliance on public transportation alternatives. The traveling public is clearly ready for transportation options. We held public hearings across Texas and, without fail, people said, "You've got to give us a choice-a good choice." If all we do is maintain our transportation infrastructure, or spend at current levels, congestion will just get worse. We must build lane miles, but we can't pave forever. In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, because of DART, people understand the positive influence of public transportation. It moves people efficiently, reduces congestion and pollution and offers economic stimulus through transit-oriented development.
