Stabilizing Bridge Foundations Jet Grouting

The support structure of the highway bridge over Arizona State 87 in Whiskey Springs, AZ, began to show signs of distress approximately one year after construction. The foundation soils (loose colluvium) were compressing, consequently deforming the 45-ft high mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall and wing wall at the south abutment. The construction crews had limited access to the walls and a requirement to strengthen the soils in place without excavation. After evaluating several mitigation measures, the general contractor, Meadow Valley Contractors, selected jet grouting as the most feasible method to mitigate further deformation.
