Public Works Continues To Struggle

Public construction appears to be taking the brunt of the continuing recession. Last November, the dollar value of total construction put-in-place was $724.8 billion, down 2.5% from the first 11 months of 2010, according to the U.S. Dept. of Commerce. During the same period, the value of total private construction actually pulled even with 2010's market activity. However, the public market was down 6.8% compared to the first 11 months of 2010 (see table).
