ASCE recommends a national goal of decreasing the number of structurally deficient bridges to 8% by 2020 and decreasing the percentage of the population driving over all deficient bridges by 75% by 2020. Carrying millions of commuters and much of our nation's commerce every day, bridges are the backbone of the U.S economy. The public expects them to be safe, reliable and in good condition-a challenge given age and limited rehab and replacement funds.
