Since its first use in 1958, polyethylene encasement has brought practical, economic and effective corrosion control to hundreds of millions of feet of iron water and wastewater pipelines. Ongoing research into this very successful method of corrosion control has resulted in an evolutionary step forward through the development of V-Bio enhanced polyethylene encasement. V-Bio is a Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) film that is enhanced with a corrosion inhibitor and a biocide. These additives are proactive enhancements that prevent microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) and galvanic corrosion occurring under undamaged areas of the encasement. V-Bio takes advantage of co-extrusion technologies in the manufacture of polyethylene film, incorporating a three-layer co-extruded LLDPE in which the inner-layer-the layer against the pipe-is infused with a proprietary blend of a non-toxic biocide and a Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI). The three co-extruded layers are then fused to form what is a one-layer film.
