When Highways Slice Cities

A growing trend in urban design and construction is that of tearing down existing highways within city cores to help revitalize those areas. Urban highways often cut through neighborhoods, create boundaries and are a hindrance to development of downtown areas and urban communities. In fact, in a meeting on April 6, 1960, President Eisenhower said that the idea of running interstate routes through the congested parts of cities was entirely against his original concept and wishes.
