A Look Back in Electric Time

Eaton's history with the Panama Canal goes back to its construction in the early 1900s when the U.S. took on the challenge to build a canal across Central America that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Cutler-Hammer Manufacturing Co., which Eaton acquired in 1978, designed the original canal control equipment in 1901. Westinghouse Distribution and Controls, which Eaton purchased in 1994, had provided much of the electrical controls, motors and generators. By eliminating the need for ships to sail around the tip of South America, the Panama Canal helped make the U.S. a world power and revolutionized global trade. The history and importance of the job is not lost on Eaton.
