Data centers are the backbone behind cloud activity that stores everything from your music and gaming data to critical work documents that build the next-generation power plant; they are also among the largest consumers of electrical power around the world. Gartner Inc. estimated that it cost $1.6 million a year to power an 8,000-sq-ft data center and those costs are rising 10% per year. When Facebook, Inc. began planning its new 300,000-sq-ft data center in Forest City, N.C., its goal was to support the needs of more than 1 billion Facebook social networking users in one of the most energy-efficient data center operations in the world.
