Clearing Far Rockaway, New York Power Plant

The National Grid Far Rockaway Power Plant was a 100-MW, natural gas-fired steam electric generating station. The station was originally commissioned in 1954 as a coal-fired station and was converted to coal/ fuel oil in 1966. Since 1994, the Far Rockaway station has utilized natural gas exclusively. The station was taken out of service in June 2012 and in the late fall of 2012 North American Dismantling Corp. (NADC) was contracted to provide for the complete abatement and demolition of the power station. Once NADC established site perimeter, security and field administration offices were established and environmental restoration activities began. Complete asbestos abatement, the removal of PCB-containing material and mercury-containing devices, the collection of contaminated water and the handling and disposal of underground and above-ground tanks were all successfully completed during this phase of the work. In addition, NADC provided for the proper closure and demolition of a 2-million-gallon fuel oil tank including remediation of impacted groundwater and soils.
