The city of Detroit covers 142 sq miles, consisting of 27 zip codes, and of its 377,602 parcels, 30% are slated for demolition. In July 2013, Detroit became the largest city in the United States to file for bankruptcy. Part of the process to rebuild and restructure Detroit is to implement one of the most ambitious demolition plans to date, unlike any ever seen in North America. On August 20, 2013, the City announced that Detroit would receive $52.2 million for the demolition of residential structures from the Hardest Hit Fund program of the U.S. Dept. of Treasury. At the end of 2013, the Motor City Mapping survey results concluded that 78,586 structures should be removed. While most of the structures are houses, about 10,000 are neighborhood commercial buildings with approximately 340 being large-scale industrial structures.
