The International Maritime Organization's U.S. Caribbean Sea Emission Control Area (ECA), covering high-traffic waters adjacent to the coasts of Puerto Rico and the United States Virgin Islands, requires water-borne vessels to reduce emissions of sulphur oxide (SO_X), nitrogen oxide (NO_X) and particulate matter. All new shipping vessels must meet the new emission requirements. In response, Crowley Maritime Corp., a marine solutions and transportation company with a liner service to Puerto Rico/ Caribbean, set out to find ways to meet the emerging emission requirements and exceed its own eco-stewardship emission control goals.
