Third-party special inspections and nondestructive testing (NDT) of structural steel elements during construction is required by the International Building Code. The project's inspection and testing plan should be developed in accordance with AISC 360: Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, or as required by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) and/or engineer of record. Chapter N of AISC 360 defines the minimum quality-control responsibilities of the fabricator and erector, and QA-required tasks of the third-party inspection agency. These responsibilities may include inspections and tests at the project site as well as the fabricator's manufacturing shop if it is required by the AHJ.
