A Different Challenge: Disaster Recovery Outside the Continental United States

Through the years, a silver lining has fringed each natural disaster to strike our communities: We have learned. In the United States, funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) put to work by state and local governments with the support of private consultants, including AEC firms, disaster recovery companies, general contractors and nonprofit organizations, has gone a long way in helping to restore the lives and livelihoods of the inhabitants of disaster-affected regions. However, in many regions of the country and abroad, more must be done.
