Big GE Haliade-X Turbine Blade Starts Fatigue Tests in Boston

Aimed for the first commercial deployment in the U.S. by 2021, the giant GE Haliade-X 12-MW offshore wind turbine has arrived at the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center in Boston for blade testing. The 351-ft-long blade will undergo months of fatigue tests to confirm that it can withstand more than 25 years of operation at sea. "The center will use bridge cranes to move the blade and servo-hydraulic ac- tuators for fatigue testing," says a center spokesman. Turbine maker GE Renew-able Energy recently said that leading Danish offshore wind developer Orsted chose Haliade-X to power planned projects in New Jersey and Maryland, and developer Equinor-SSE will use it for the U.K.-based 3.6-GW Dogger Bank wind farm—set to be the world's largest offshore project when it completes. GE Renewable Energy says it has contracted the Haliade-X for nearly 5 GW of offshore wind project capacity globally. Haliade-X currendy is manufactured only in France.
