Innovative Design Benefits Canal Project in Phoenix

When the Hohokam Freeway in Phoenix first opened, portions of the Old Cross Cut Canal needed to be relocated. The Old Cross Cut Canal serves a dual purpose in that it transfers water from the Arizona Canal to the Grand Canal and prevents flooding by conveying runoff to the Salt River.The final stage of the project converted an open ditch along Arcadia Drive between Indian School Road and the Arizona Canal to a 120-in.-dia cast-in-place pipe through the Old Cross Cut Canal, a 102-in.-dia rubber-gasketed reinforced concrete pipe under the Arizona Canal and a large hydraulic structure.
